Charity Collection by Bikers at Viking Festival
This year, a group of Honda Gold Wing bikers will take part in the opening day Parade on 27th August which leaves at 2pm from Morrison’s. They have been a great attraction over the last few years with their fabulous bikes, playing Scottish music on their sound systems and often wearing kilts. Parked on the Prom after the parade they attract lots of admiring spectators.
This year, however, they will be in town on a special occasion, they will be taking part in a collection for Ayrshire Hospice as a tribute to a colleague who died earlier this year.
Norman Stewart of Kilbirnie was a member of the Scotia Gold Wings club for many years travelling throughout the UK and Europe with the club. It was through Norman that the bikes became part of the Viking Festival. Grahame Ross, the past secretary of the Festival explained “I was in the computer shop in Main Street about eight years ago asking Lorraine about getting motor bikes for the Parade and she said Norman has a Honda Goldwing , speak to him. I did and he got the club to attend with about fifteen bikers which was a huge success.”
During the last two or three years Norman who owned GoGo Radio in Brisbane Road, then Coast TV, shot videos for the Viking Festival which he put on YouTube a few hours after filming. The last videos he shot were during the Festival in 2010 which included the visit to the RFA LARGS BAY. Other videos were of the Typhoon display and the Viking style funeral of Peter Boyle. All were done on a voluntary basis and without any fees being requested by Norman.
His illness was sudden, his care in Ayr Hospice wonderful so the Scotia Gold Wings Club are making this collection in a tribute to Norman.
